Attending the AICD Australian Governance Summit last week provided valuable insights into the evolving challenges facing businesses in Australia. Two key themes stood out—artificial intelligence (AI) and geopolitical pressures. These forces are reshaping the economic landscape and will require businesses to adapt strategically.

AI: A Tool, Not a Threat

AI is rapidly changing industries, from automation in agriculture to data-driven decision-making in retail.  While some fear AI replacing jobs, its true power lies in enhancing efficiency and competitiveness.  Australia’s productivity is at an all-time low, we need to reinvigorate ourselves and find how to improve our efficiency and effectiveness, particularly on the world stage. Even small to medium businesses can leverage AI to streamline operations, improve customer engagement, and gain insights from data that were previously inaccessible. However, it’s crucial to approach AI with a well-informed strategy—adopting the right tools while ensuring ethical use and data security.

Geopolitical Pressures: A Shifting Economic Landscape

The global economy is facing increasing instability due to geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions, and inflationary pressures. Businesses, particularly those reliant on exports or global supply chains, must remain agile and also prepare for potential fluctuations in consumer demand as economic uncertainty impacts household and business spending.  We need to be better prepared for disruption and build resilient businesses that can weather geopolitical storms.

What Can Businesses Do?

  1. Educate & Upskill – Invest in understanding AI applications and their relevance to your industry, and stay informed on global and national economic shifts and pressures.

  2. Risk Management – Assess any vulnerabilities in your business and build resilience against geopolitical disruptions.

  3. Embrace Technology – AI-driven solutions, from marketing automation to predictive analytics, can drive efficiency and growth.

By proactively addressing these challenges, business owners can position themselves for long-term success. The key is not to fear change but to harness it for competitive advantage.
