8th March is celebrated globally as International Women’s Day (IWD), a time to recognise the achievement of women across all sectors and advocate for gender equality. I am a firm believer in equality everyday not just on IWD, however I recognise that IWD helps to shine a light on any inequality that exists and more importantly gives us all a reason to pause and celebrate the women in our lives. This year’s IWD slogan is “Accelerate Action” highlighting the urgency of expediting progress toward gender parity.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, women now own over one-third of small businesses in the country and ASX-listed companies have also increased their female representation on boards. The Australian Institute of Company Directors reported that as of 2023, women occupied over 35% of board seats in the ASX 200, a significant improvement from previous years, but clearly there is still room for improvement.
Here in Gladstone, there are many successful women entrepreneurs, industry and corporate leaders who are making significant contributions to our local economy and community.
As an accountant and business advisor, every day I work with women in business who are dedicated to serving their clients, customers and our community and securing their own financial future by building a resilient business.

As a non-executive Director on a number of local boards I am also surrounded by women who make an invaluable contribution to our region as board members, leaders in their respective organisations, and community champions.
We often don’t “do it alone” but instead have life and business partners, teams, peers, friends and families who are the wind beneath our wings, helping us achieve our goals and dreams. Recognising these support networks is essential, as they play a crucial role in advancing gender equality and empowering women in business and leadership.
At UHY Haines Norton Gladstone, we are passionate about supporting local business owners to grow and thrive. If you need professional business advisory, accounting or taxation services, call us today on 07 4972 1300.
